Going to see it with the right frame of mind and treating the it like a comedy can be satisfying, but only on a very base level.Princesses Dating App Adventur. The UFC inspired combat in this film does have some great moves every now and then, but most of it is just a mishmash of motion with it not being clear who is doing what to whom. The purpose of brainless martial arts films is to actually see Jean Claude Van Damme or whoever performing sweet moves. Done almost entirely with stunt doubles, the sequences are close-ups which are on-screen for such a short period of time that you can’t easily see what is happening.

The only reason for going to a movie like this are the fight scenes and here they are fairly mediocre. It struck me as kind of strange that guys who are clearly in their mid to late 20s are still at high school and living with their parents, but this phenomenon occurs in countless American movies. The accompanying soundtrack is perfectly silly – emo pop rock intermingled with chart-topping hiphop. These character developments and the plot in general happen via dialogue exchanges which are constant sources of unintentional comedy. Those close to Jake - the trainer who doesn’t allow fighting outside the gym, the protective and disapproving mother, the seen-it-all-before girlfriend - all go from not wanting him to fight to willing him on to bashing the bad guy to a pulp. No prizes for guessing what comes next: a Zen-like master to train Jake, multiple training montages complete with slow-motion bits, a love interest who is predictably tied to fighting prowess and of course some drama which ups the stakes of the final fight. He gets badly beaten and humiliated and seeks revenge. At a party, Jake is goaded into a fight by the coolest, best fighting guy in the school. Jake Tyler (Tom Cruise look-alike Sean Faris) moves to a new town where the girls are always in bikinis, the muscle-bound guys are always fighting each other and everyone is extremely wealthy. It’s what I like to call a ‘trailer confirmer’ – a 90 minute version of what has been compressed into 90 seconds. If you watch the trailer, you don’t really need to watch the whole film. Never Back Down plays out as The Karate Kid done as The Fast and the Furious or Step Up 2: The Streets, with fight-club style brawls replacing underground car races and competitive dancing.
